Cushings Syndrome in Dogs – Identifying Symptoms and Treatment
Cushings syndrome in dogs is a disease that is caused by an overproduction of
cortisol in a dog’s body. Cortisol is a stress hormone that is essential to standard bodily functions, but a
chronic overproduction of it is what leads to Cushings. A vast majority of cases involving Cushings in dogs—close
to 85%--are caused by tumors of the pituitary gland that in turn cause the adrenal glands to overproduce cortisol.
This majority of Cushings syndrome cases are categorized as canine Cushings disease. The other 15% are caused by
tumors directly on the adrenal glands.

Cushings disease in dogs is most commonly seen in
middle-aged pooches between the ages of about five and seven. Older dogs are likely to come down with symptoms as
well. While every breed can contract the disease, those most likely to suffer are those breeds from the Terrier
family. While this is the case, there are no clear signs as to why this is the case. Also, female canines are more
likely to contract Cushings as well. How you do you know if your pet has this disease?
The Symptoms of Cushings Syndrome
- Pot Belly: Caused by increased liver size, relaxation of abdominal muscles,
and an increase in appetite.
- Increased thirst
- Lethargy
- Weakness
- Infertility
- Increased in frequency of urination
- Overall discomfort and sickness

These symptoms are not unique to Cushings. Therefore, you should never attempt to
diagnose your dog based solely on observation, since they might be confused with another unknown
condition. Extensive blood and urin tests by a trained professional in order to determine if indeed have a dog
with Cushings disease.
More severe symptoms of Cushings syndrome in dogs can develop if left untreated.
Infections of the urinary tract, blood clots, increased blood pressure and negative behavioral changes are all more
advanced canine symptoms. Once your dog has been diagnosed, proper canine Cushings disease treatment should begin
immediately. Drugs are often used, but usually come with unpleasant side effects. Consider the popularity of a
homeopathic approach, which can be safe and effective.
